When the World's on Fire (2012)
What is the American Dream? Does it still exist?
Javier's journey, far from family and familiarity, has brought him to the south in search of work and the hope for a better tomorrow. Will his vision of success be dampened by the opaque chaos that slowing encases him, leaving him numb to society? Javier must escape the bottle to realize his vision of a triumphant return to a distant family.
Javier lives on the edge of a homeless camp. He spends most of his days collecting cans and frequenting charity food lines set up by a local church. Other than his dog, only a boy working at the local bodega, LaJuan, interrupts Javier’s isolation. In LaJaun, Javier recognizes something wholesome and pure, a respite from the turbulent cast of characters in his new life. As Javier’s alienation to his family intensifies, LaJuan increasingly becomes his confidant.
By night Javier works at The Fandango, a local nightclub, stocking the bar and sweeping the parking lot. In the seedy environment of The Fandango, Javier becomes ensnared in a dangerous situation with Honey, a local hustler, and her group of drug-dealing bullies. Javier’s unsuccessful attempt to navigate this foreign world plunges him back to his only source of comfort. In doing so, a series of catastrophic events is unleashed. As Javier scrambles for cover, he recoils to the one pace he has so reluctantly avoided.
